Stuff That Happened During My Pregnancies: Part Two

March 21, 2009

When we’d last left my pregnancy story, I’d miscarried my first at 11.5 weeks the day before my sister’s wedding (where I was the maid of honor).

Several months went by without me being pregnancy, and finally, a few days after my 30th birthday, I got a positive test.  My doctor was wonderful about monitoring things right away — I had blood work immediately,  ultrasounds at six and eight weeks, and heartbeat checks at ten and twelve weeks.  We had planned a vacation for April, and decided to go somewhere relaxing, and in the US, just in case I needed medical attention.

To be honest, although we’d been pretty nervous, I really didn’t think I’d need medical attention on our trip.  We went to Phoenix, AZ, when I was 14-15 weeks, and had a great, relaxing trip.  Until the last day…. we’d gone for a late lunch, and when I headed to the ladies’ room at the end of lunch, I noticed spotting.  I started crying right there, and we quickly left the restaurant.

By that time, my doctor’s office was going to be closed with the time difference, and I knew what she’d say anyway.  As someone with O – blood, I’d need a Rho Gam shot.  So we called the front desk at our hotel and asked where the nearest hospital is.

Note to self – nearest doesn’t mean best.  While the hospital was probably very good, it was a level one trauma center and had much bigger concerns that me.  I waited around for hours, until they gave me a catheter for a simple ultrasound.  After many hours, I found out my baby was fine.  Furthermore, the technician told me he was reasonably certain of my baby’s agenda – a boy!  As my nurse prepared my release papers, she told me the technician was never wrong.

After my regularly scheduled ultrasound back at home, I was told that my baby’s gender couldn’t be determined, but if they had to guess, it was probably a girl.  Fifteen ultrasounds later (and that’s a story for next time), my baby’s gender still couldn’t be determined.  Until my c-section at 36 weeks – when I was told, “It’s a Girl”!

15 ultrasounds?! Did your husband pull a Tom Cruise and buy one for the home? You’ll have to explain that in your next post. Glad it was uneventful other than that trip to the ER (though the 15 ultrasounds leave me wondering). Glad you had a healthy surprise in the end.
