The Nielsen Power Moms – How to Pick Just 50?

May 10, 2009

I came home from vacation yesterday to see loads of tweets about the Nielsen Online 50 Power Moms.  After scouring the list of influential moms (and yes, I wasn’t expecting to see my name but was still looking for it – admit it – you were too!) I realized there were a lot of social media moms’ names that should have been there.  And, I came to the realization that it must have been a really difficult job to pick just 50, as all of the names on the list belonged there too.  I was so glad and proud to see some of my bloggy friends  – Audrey, Lucretia, Amy, Christine, Lori, Elizabeth, and Tara, as well as the rest of the 50.  But in my mind, these moms listed below are also online power moms:

  • Ciaran Blumenfeld - Popshopology, Car and Caboodle, Mommies With Style, LA Moms Blog – Ciaran is definitely a multitasking mommy, blogging at a bunch of sites, and running her own online shop, Francie Pants.  She’s a superstar in my eyes.
  • Katja Presnal – Katja is incredibly influential and has a huge following, I can’t believe she was omitted!  Clearly an oversight.
  • Jill Asher – while they mentioned the SVMomBlog, Jill wasn’t mentioned directly.  She’s the co-founder of the SVMomsGroup and is incredibly intelligent and insightful.
  • Kristen Chase – Kristen is co-founder of Cool Mom Picks (one of the original and most popular review blogs), and Parent Blogger Network, and has her own blog at Motherhood Uncensored.  She’s brilliant and very influential.
  • Colleen Padilla – the owner of Classy Mommy, Colleen understands mommies as well as business and runs a great website.
  • Isabel Kallman – AlphaMom.com – my blogging idol – Isabel is brilliant and a wonderful businesswoman and friend
  • Kim Moldofsky – Hormone Colored Days – Kim brings incredible insights to the blogging world, and makes me think in ways that others don’t.
  • Allison Worthington – founder of the BlissDom conference and Blissfully Domestic, Alli is incredibly inspiring.

There are so many more I’d want to add, like Elizabeth, Dawn, Kim, Catherine, and Jenn… maybe it could be a top 100?

Truth is, I’m not sure why we’re constantly making lists and powerpoint presentations to point out best of x and best of y. I think successful bloggers know who they are and I’m not sure why a list, which as far as I know does nothing other than pat a few backs, is what we rely on for data.

SO MANY great blogs I read were omitted, to the point that I wonder what kind of street-cred we should attribute to it.

JMO. Welcome back (FINALLY!!!)…

Wow. Jodi thank you so much for thinking to include me in this list of other influentials. Totally appreciate it. Just saw this now when I was cruising your sites through your new homepage. Talk soon. xo

Now THIS is an honor! When people I know and respect hold me in high esteem, that means a lot to me. And I love your list.

To Jill’s point, part of the reason to make noise about such a list is that Nielsen is well-known and respected when it comes to ratings. I cringe at the thought that PR people who are not tapped into the momosphere will take the Power 50 Moms list at face value and restrict most or all of their outreach to that group rather than digging deeper into the community.

Companies should connect with bloggers who offer the right fit, not just the ones who get big hits.
