I realized recently that while the tagline of my blog is “a career mom’s adventures in stay at home mommyhood”, lately, it’s more been “an unathletic mom’s attempt to run in endurance events because she likes the cute fitness clothes associated with such events”. So, here’s a post about that career thing again…
On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to talk to Stuart Ritter, a T. Rowe Price Personal Financial Planner who helped with the development of the Great Piggy Bank Adventure, a new game at Epcot in Walt Disney World. I immediately jumped at the chance to meet Stuart – because it was a great fit for my blog and my interests – and…. finance! lunch out! the financial district! adult conversation!
When I left my job last year, I didn’t do it because I didn’t like my career. I LOVED it. But, that type of career, combined with my husband’s career, didn’t work for our family. I was always stressed. And, sometimes, when I walked from 100 Summer St to meetings at 245 Summer St, I’d see moms with kids walking to the Children’s Museum. My heart would always ache just a bit – wanting so badly to be able to take my kids to the museum in the middle of the work week. (Editorial note: Number of times Jodi has actually taken her kids to the museum since becoming a stay at home mom last year? Once. Last month. For a blog event. Sigh….).
So, my lunch with Stuart and his colleague in T. Rowe PR was a welcome diversion. It was great to talk to someone “in the business” about personal finance, especially about one of my personal passions – teaching kids how to understand personal finance. Lunch was great, and I learned some great things about the attraction.
But then I realized…. wow, I did a LOT of talking! I mean, a LOT! I was supposed to conduct an interview, and I just talked and talked and talked. Kind of like the Verizon FiOs video at the blogger event where I look like I was the only blogger in attendance because I couldn’t stop talking. I talked about Disney, about the Moms Panel, about my kids, about Traveling Mom, about the EE5K, about blogging — ohmygosh, I monopolized the conversation….
And, I also realized, after the fact, that my hands were totally orange from the Garrett’s Popcorn I wolfed down before leaving the house.
I’ve got to get out more.
